A week later, it goes exactly to plan, which shocks the shit out of me.

You’d think with this group, things would go sideways, but I gotta give them credit. When it came right down to it, they were tough, ruthless, and threatening. Everything they had to be.

The nut punching didn’t happen until things were done.

Now, two hours out from that warehouse, the lights of the city are filling the windshield. We’re in a van, but not the damned police transport van. Who the fuck does that? Uses a police van from an auction to commit a crime? Unlike that bare bones one, this one is a full-out Minivan, and Jonas seems quite comfortable behind the wheel.

Okay, so the seats are fucking comfortable. Not that I’m going to tell him that. It’s still not cool. Though I think I’m the only one that thinks that. Thank fuck Ransom had his truck there. Otherwise, we’d all be crammed into this thing, and while it’s roomy, it sure as fuck isn’t roomy enough for all of us.

Suddenly, Maverick snickers. Then again, louder this time. Heads turn to him as his chuckles bubble up into full-on laughter.

“I don’t want to have this conversation again,” he mimics between fits of giggles, parroting my words from earlier at the warehouse. “I can’t believe you did that. Just smashed that wrench down on his hand, then said that shit. It was gold.”

“You do realize you’re my lawyer, right? Shouldn’t you be mad at that shit? Aren’t you technically an accessory to a crime?”

“A crime?” Maverick asks, trying to look innocent, but still laughing. “I didn’t see any crime. I was out with my brothers tonight, checking on a possible acquisition for our company.”

“Is that how you guys play it?”

“Yep,” Declan says from the backseat. “Built in alibis.”

“You say that like you’ve needed it a bunch. You guys aren’t hard. You’re not in the life, so what the fuck would you need an alibi for?”

“Right. You’re right. We don’t. Never needed one. Ever. Cause we’re pure as the driven snow,” Zach says, batting his eyes at me.

“That’s some shady shit right there. You’re not going to tell me?”

Jonas clears his throat. “Is there any reason we should? Do we need to dredge up the past? Would you like to share yours?”

“Not a fuckin’ chance. But I thought that’s the cost of being in a family. Sharing your shit. Am I wrong?”

“Yeah,” Declan says. “You’re wrong. In a family, you share the big shit, the stuff that matters and might affect everyone else. But if you did some stuff you’re not proud of, I don’t think you have to parade that around for everyone to see. It’s okay to just forgive yourself and move the fuck on.”

“Forgive yourself?” How does that even work? How do you just let it go? How do you stop beating yourself up about it?

“Yes,” Jonas says, meeting my eyes in the rearview.

“It’s that easy for you? Just…forgive, and it’s done?” Thank fuck Colton’s in the other vehicle with Ransom and Nick.
